There are basic gardening skills and techniques that every gardener must know. It doesn't mean you have to know them right away, or that you must know every one of them in order to be a good gardener.
Thomas Jefferson famously said "...I am still devoted to the garden. but tho’ an old man, I am but a young gardener." He knew that there was still much to learn even as he approached his twilight.
We should all be learning something new every time we are in the garden, every time we read about gardening, and every time we are in the company of gardeners. It is part of the joy of gardening.
